Gatehouse Comments

Kilsby Hall is probably on the site of a prebendal house created in 1390. Before that there must have been a a centre for the demense holdings of the bishop in the village, probably at that site but Gatehouse is unaware of any evidence to suggests this was used residentially by the bishop although the location near Watling Street might well have made it a useful stop over point. There was a fishpond south-west of the village, and a rabbit warren north of the village but this could just be associated with the C14 prebendal house, there is no other apparent evidence of a high status dwelling in the surrounding landscape or place-names. Manor recorded as held by the abbey of St Mary, Coventry in the Domesday Book but was part of the episcopal estate of the See of Lincoln from 1105. What was Thompson's evidence for suggesting this as a residential manor?
