Turner and Parker write "We have also a licence to crenellate a house in the city in the 19th Edward II: this house we have not been able to trace."

Gatehouse Comments

Gatehouse has not traced this supposed licence and without some details tracing the house is impossible. This may be actually a confused reference to the "domum suam in villa de ... Salop" the licence to John Charlton house in Shrewsbury. The difference between Sarum and Salop may seem clear in type but in the small abbreviated handwriting of the court scribes it is rather less obvious, particularly when one considers Parker may have been working in candle light. On the other hand Parker was a considerable scholar and this reference can not be entirely dismissed. The given map reference is for for St Thomas's Church, next to the market place, which represents the heart of the secular city of Salisbury.
