Henricus de Wylyngton obtained, in 1318, a licence to crenellate is 'mansum' at Culverden, Gloucestershre.

Gatehouse Comments

The de Wylyington's were a Gloucestershire knightly family. The index of the CPR writes "Culverton (in Sandhurst Parish)". Culverton is not marked or named on either the modern or 1st edition OS map but there is a Willington Court in Sandhurst parish, which dates from the C16 but has earlier origins. It seems entirely probably that this is the site of the Wylyngton's house. Willington Court Members of the Willington family were lords of Sandhurst manor from c.1200 until 1396. The manor house, perhaps originally moated, contains part of a medieval stone tower with walls up to 1.8m thick. The timber-framed block was added in the 16th century and major renovations and additions were made in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. (VCH Draft 2010)
