Gatehouse Comments

Abandoned in 1450 and materials used to repair the other episcopal palaces. The bishops had a grant of free warren for numerous named manors, including Preess in 1259, which does suggested a residence here at that time, although it may have been a privilege obtained for the manor steward. The form of the manor house is unknown although the complete lack of remains might suggest a unfortified timber building. The given map reference is for the parish church which, by analogue, the manor house was likely to have been adjacent.
