Graham writes "In 1541 we are told there was a chapel at "the Fawe Stone used for private masses" but of the tower which is supposed to have stood near not a trace remains."

Gatehouse Comments

The chapel is recorded in the SMR but no mention is made of a tower. Is Graham making an unsupported supposition that a private chapel must have meant a nearby high status and, in this area, fortified building. The SMR records that it is suggested the chapel later became the parish church, possibly suggesting that the chapel was a chapel of ease rather than a private chapel. Falstone Farm Bastle is near to the parish church but is dated 1604 but this may be the date of a rebuild of an earlier, ?fortified, building.
