Three fortified sites were positioned along the Lewes-London Roman Road - Lewes, Isfield and Hartfield...There is also a Mote Field at Holtye, again on the line of the road, which may suggest an as yet unidentified fourth castle site. (Jones 2003)

Gatehouse Comments

This seems fairly weak evidence. The term 'mote' may well mean a small piece, merely suggesting a small field, rather than being the site of a motte. Equally it might be a mis-transcribed 'mose' (with a long s) meaning marshy or boggy field.
