Gatehouse Comments

The medieval development of the town is complex with the original Saxon settlement of Dadeslie being somewhat to the north-west of the castle site around the virtually lost church at All Hallows Hill (SK590943). The town seems then to have gravitated towards the castle (or was there already a secondary Saxon centre here?) although All Hallows remained the parish church until c. 1200 when replace by St Mary's (which is outside the supposed town defences). If there were some urban defences at Tickhill then it may be these represented a defended or demarcated 'french' quarter rather than a true urban defence. As with some other Yorkshire towns (notably York but also nearby Doncaster) the 'gate' names of some of the town roads derives from the Viking 'gata' meaning street and are not references to lost gates or gatehouses.
