Jackson writes 'There is said to have been a castle here.' If this is not Cleobury Mortimer Castle Toot then presumably at or near Mawley Hall (SO688752).

Gatehouse Comments

Mawley was a very small Domesday manor held by a sub-tenant from Ralph Mortimer and for a quarter of a knight's fee in 1240. These farmsteads held for small military service are sometimes marked by a small motte but are not usually called castles in contemporary documents. Mawley Hall is a grade 1 listed house built c1730. The hall is in a Deer Park said to extant before 1552 which means there must have been a precursor to the C18 Hall. At some point in the medieval period the Blount family obtained the manor and presumably built a hall. Was this castellated? It does not appear to have been moated and if crenellated it is likely these were decorative and the building was thin walled and not fortified.
