During field investigation, the remains of two enclosures with an integral moat, were discovered and surveyed at SD 7758 4862. Both features are well defined and appear to be of similar date. The moat is partially wet. The southern enclosure is the more prominent and probably represents the remains of a moated homestead with adjacent outer works or fish ponds to the north. The moat is closely situated to 'Bolton Peel', a C17 farmhouse and is assumed by the owner, to be the site of an earlier 'Bolton Peel'. (PastScape ref. F1 RL 15-SEP-61)

Gatehouse Comments

The moat, despite being in good condition in 1961, is/was not scheduled and appears to have now been built on!
