About a quarter of a mile South-east of the hall is a mound known as castle hill and thought to be the remains of a Motte and Bailey castle. (Long 1967)

Gatehouse Comments

Position isolated from modern settlement (but site of DMV) but does overlook river crossing. Clearly a mound or hillock on low resolution aerial photo but no sign of ditches. Not recorded in PastScape or in the online SMR. Probably natural but in parkland and may be a park feature. Part over-layed by ridge and furrow. In view of lack of other authorities must by doubtful.
