Square depression with a possible cross-wall at Coupland Bridge, of uncertain date or function. Possibly a ringwork. (PastScape)

Earthwork, marked site of Fort on O.S., on the N. side of the main road at Coupland on the W. end of the parish, lies at the N.E. end of a slight ridge. The only remains are faint traces of a sinking about 87 ft. square and possibly of a cross-wall. (RCHME 1936)

Gatehouse Comments

There is confusion in some references between this site and Coupland Bridge 1. Fore instance Perriam and Robinson give the map reference NY712189 but their prime source (Machell) and other part of their description almost certainly refers to the site at NY709189. The location at a point where the Roman road crosses the Coupland Beck might be that of a toll point. The modern Beck is hardly a barrier but the medieval Beck may well have been larger and will have had a surrounding area of boggy land making it a more considerable barrier, particularly for wheeled vehicles and driven livestock.
