Gatehouse Comments

The reference given is in valley but at SO949279 there is the peak of a steep hill. The position of this hill would be consistent an Iron Age hill fort but not with a medieval castle unless it was reusing existing earthworks. The hill is prominent enough to have gained a castle place-name purely because of its form.
