A new castle was built in Walsall in 1385-6. No further information. (PastScape)

Ralph Basset the younger, Lord Basset, was preparing to build 'a new castle' at Walsall, but it seems that in fact no new house was built. Instead the existing 'manor-house within the moat of the park' was repaired and extended (VCH)

Gatehouse Comments

The moated manor house was in Ralph Bassett's hands at this time and it is not clear if his 'new castle' was a plan to rebuild this existing building or a new building on a fresh site. Bassett died in 1390 but the existing manor was repaired and extended in 1388-9 so perhaps the 'new castle' was only ever intended to be a refurbishment of the manor house. Given map reference is for the Manor House site.
