Possible motte. (King 1983 ref. PSIA 1958)

Moat around mound 5 feet high circa 40 feet diameter, with 2 ?modern causeways. C13 C14 pottery from old turf line below mound and from surface. Destroyed by ploughing. OS suggest mill mound but no documentary support. (Suffolk HER)

Gipping, Hill Farm (TM/08156340). Following the discovery of pottery sherds of the 13/14th century during removal of soil, excavations were carried out on a moat-enclosed mound. (PSIA 1958)

Gatehouse Comments

Isolated from settlement 1km from church. Excavated in 1958. Recorded in PastScape as site of probable Mill Mound.Location is not really suggestive of a motte and a few shards of C13/C14 pottery are also not suggestive of motte castle, which in this area, would be expected to be of a C11/C12 date. It should be noted King noted this as a 'possible' site, a term he used for sites about which he had considerable doubt.
