Gatehouse Comments

On modern map called The Home Farm but on 1891 map called Wood Eaton Manor. The Aston's, who held this manor, as sub-tenant of the barons of Stafford, in the later middle ages were of knightly status and sometime held the office of Sheriff of Staffordshire. Sir John Aston, was made a Knight of the Bath at the marriage of Prince Arthur, eldest son of Henry VII. The castle name may reflect the status of the family, rather than the particular form of their manor house. The family seems to have made their principle caput at Tixall in the C16 and this house may have been sub-let from then on.
