To the west of North Road is a field marked on the 1st Edition map as Crow Castle. The discovery of 12th-century pottery on the site combined with its name makes it a contender for the site of Crofts Castle, a medieval manor documented from the 13th century. However, Castle Hill in West Crewkerne parish has also been suggested as the centre of the Croft estate (Dunning 1977). (Richardson, 2003)

Gatehouse Comments

The discovery of foundations of a Norman masonry tower in 2011 at Croft Castle resolved any discussion over the location of Baldwin de Reviers C12 castri de cruca and the centre of the Croft (Craft) estate. The castle name is unexplained although this could, of course, have been simply the site of a rookery. (A hedgerow with two trees at this point shown on the 1889 map has now been removed.)
