Unlocated castle mentioned in 1160-64 Pipe Rolls with Clun and Whitchurch as Fitz Alan property. Ruthin in Denbighshire (SJ 124579) seems never to have been on Fitz Alan land, and the castle shows no features of this early date, so identification with this site is unlikely. It may be Castle Bryn Amlwg (SO168812) which stands close to stream said to have been called Ruthyn Rhiwgantyn (Arch. Camb., 1855, p. 56). A further reference in 1212 (Pipe) may refer either to the same site or to Ruthin, Dendighshire, although as noted there is no evidence for such early work there. (Hogg and King)
