Gatehouse Comments

However, there is a castle site at Tyrley directly across river from the town and the relatively recently discovered site at Fordhall, not known to King, a few hundred meters upriver. The Central Marches Historic Towns Survey writes 'The Abbey of Combermere owned a "hall" (SA 5674) in Market Drayton in the late 14th century, which was probably for the administration of the town's affairs (Rowley 1987, 6)' and it is possible this was the building to which Leland was referring. There are no visible remains of the Civil War defences known to have existed and the potential for preserved buried remains in the town is poor. Given map reference is for parish church.
