John of Worcester recorded that King Stephen besieged Ludlow Castle in 1139, creating two siege castles in front of it. The Historia Anglorum gives an account of the siege (PastScape)

Hinc Wigornia rex abscedens, apud Ludelawe castrametatus est. Ubi in expungnatione castelli quod contra illum erat doubos in locis extructa munitione forti manu militum instruit. (John of Worcester)

One may have been a mound removed to extend the parish church in 1190.
