A mutilated earthwork mound allegedly the findspot of an urn and burnt bones prior to 1872 during road construction. Possibly a Romano-British barrow, but given its position more likely to be a medieval motte. The surviving fragment of mound is 2.8 metres high and had an original diameter of 18 metres. In 1974 it was seen to be incorporated into the kitchen garden of a farmhouse. The mound has been mapped from aerial photographs. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

Scheduled as a Bronze Age bowl barrow but marked on OS map as 'motte'. Eaton may represent a part of the Domesday manor of Choulton possibly the Botreaux Fee mentioned in Eyton. It is, of course, possible that a pre-existing bowl barrow was used as a motte.
