NU 05860108. 110m south east of Whitton Grange is the dwelling house referred to in NU00SE 33. It is a rectangular two-storeyed structure built of rough-shaped stones, raised upon foundations of large boulders. The walls are approximately 1.3m thick. The ground plan measures 11.9m east-west and 6.4m north-south. There are no original doors or windows extant. The gable ends and roof are modern. Outbuildings have been added to north, east and south sides. The dwelling is at present uninhabited. It is of the defended house type. Similar defended houses have been encountered at Gatehouses NY 788889. They had been assigned to the Tudor period (F1 ASP 30-JAN-1957).

Whitton Farm North Cottage. Now used for holiday accommodation, this is a two storeyed cottage 12m by 6.2m externally (not including recent outshuts on each side) on the west side of the farm. The lower parts of the side walls and west end are of large roughly-shaped blocks and around 1m thick (not 1.3m as stated above). The upper parts of the walls and the entire east end have been rebuilt in coursed stone. There are various blocked openings in the walls, but the only trace of one that might be original is the south jamb of a doorway set centrally in the west end, later replaced by a small square window blocked by the present stack. The wall thicknesses and the general character of the fabric strongly suggest the original building here was a bastle (Ryder 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)

Gatehouse Comments

This building and Whitton Farmhouse are set at right angles to each other but there doesn't seem to be any suggestion that they formed two sides of an enclosure.
