Hanging Shaw Farmhouse consists of an early 19th century block with a slightly taller block (7.15m by 5.9m externally) attached to its south west end. This appears largely of later 18th century date, but is clearly a remodelling of an older structure, of which the lower part of the wall between the two sections survives; this is 1.2m in thickness, and has very large roughly squared angle quoins (Ryder 1994-5).
