A large farm with exceptional views over the river and far beyond. Document tell us that at least one, perhaps two, bastles were here, but there is no sign of them now. (Dodds 1999)

Gatehouse Comments

Dodds does not cite his authority but possibly this is Dodds, Madeleine Hope (ed), 1940, Northumberland County History (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) Vol. 15. Almost regardless of this evidence it is clear from the topography and rig and furrow this was the site of a farm stead and, in this area, that is likely to have been in the form of a pele-house type bastle in the C17. Rig and furrow delimits the possible area for this bastle to that occupied by the grade 2 listed C19 farmhouse and associated C18 and C19 outbuildings.
