At Coathill are the remains of a pele, two walls of which still stand to 3m. Only the foundations of the others are visible (J H Crickmay 3.1.67)
The probable remains of a pele house or bastle walls, 1.5m thick, now average only 1m in height (F1 BHP 30-SEP-1970).
The site of the former farm at Coathill stands just below the summit of a ridge at about 180m OD. The 1st Edition OS 6 inch gives the name Coathill and show the building as still roofed.
Very little remains on the site today; the grassed footings of walls surrounding two small enclosures, a well, and the bastle itself, represented only by a rubbly mound c.1m high that seems to represent the west end and a scatter of rubble that may indicate the north wall.
The remains have clearly deteriorated over the last 30 years. The only shaped stones seen on the survey visit were stacked on wooden rollers, awaiting removal, showing that the site is still being used as a quarry (Ryder 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)
