The ruins of a 'stonehouse' or bastle (Hadcock 1939) are recorded at Bradley in 1541. Foundations of considerable buildings may still be traced. (Tomlinson 1902)

Bradley is an 18th/19th century farmhouse. There are no apparent remains of a bastle in its fabric, or in the immediate vicinity (F1 ECW 05-DEC-1966). (Northumberland HER)

Gatehouse Comments

King and Dodds mention one bastle and presume it was either at Bradley Hall or Bradley Hall Farm. The 1541 mention reads “At Braydley ys a stone house of the inherytaunce of Nicholas Carrow & lyeth waste & unplenyshed. See also Bradley Greenbyre, where there is a bastle, and Bradley Hall. There is no physical evidence of a bastle here and the recorded 'stonehouse' is, arguably, more likely to have been at Bradley Hall.
