It has been recorded that a tower was built at Cheswick. It must have been built after 1400, as it was not mentioned in a list compiled at that time. It stood on the north side of the village, but there is no trace of it remaining. (Keys to the Past)

The tower at Cheswick was built after 1400, as no reference to it occurs in a list compiled about that time (Hodgson).

It stood on the north side of the village, but no trace of it remains (Raine).

There are no visible remains of a tower at Cheswick, and no local tradition of one (F1 DS 31-OCT-68). (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

Although it does not occur in the 1415 list it is well attested in late C16 lists as a "lytle yower of the inherytaunce of one Thomas Mannors" although ruinous in 1541. A chapel at Chesewick was granted licence to hold services for one year in 1360. It was located on Chapel Hill to the East of the village (PastScape 6454). This was presumably part of a manorial complex of which the tower was as C15 addition. The whole is lost but seems to have been on the north east side of the hamlet (does East House occupy the site?).
