No remains of tower belonging to the Grey's of Chillingham, recorded as decayed in 1542. Graham quotes the record as "At Ancroft, two miles from the ryver of Tweede, there ys a lytle fortresse standinge nere unto the churche of the saide towne, of th' inherytaunce of Gray of Chillingham, scarcely being in good repare"

Gatehouse Comments

Graham assumes this refers to Tower of St Ann's church. However, since "nere" is a bit unclear and the church tower could not have been in private hands this may be a separate tower. However it may also be that the living of the parson was in the hands of Grey's. See also Ancroft Church of St Ann
