' little more than a heap of rubble which experts claim to have been a bastle' Internal dimensions 22ft by 21ft. (Dodds 1999)

Measures 6.7m x 6.5m overall, side wall 0.7m thick, end wall 0.9m thick. Fallen upper cruck roof truss (Ryder 1984).

When recorded in 1984 the remains of the farmhouse, 6.7m by 6.5m externally, with walls of heavy rubble 0.7m to 0.9m thick, were identified as a possible bastle. Entry was by a cross passage against the east end, and there were remains of an outshut to the north; there were fallen remains of a central cruck or upper crick truss. The buildings are now much more tumbled and ruinous, and it is difficult to make any assessment; it would seem possible that Shorngate was a late 17th or early 18th century house rather than a bastle (Pers Comm, P F Ryder, 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Dodds 'experts' are not identified but presumably based on Ryder's 1984 report, a report made early in his career, made with suitable provision, and revised by him, himself, in 1994.
