Milfield was included in John Warburton's 'Notices of Ruined Towers' in 1715, and local historians believe they hold evidence that tower foundations lie beneath farm buildings in the village. It is not documented in the surveys of 1541 or 1584. (PastScape ref. Dodds 1999)

Gatehouse Comments

Warburton's list was not just of towers and Milfield is included as a village. The 'local historians' mentioned by Dodds are not identified, the farm in the village (Demense Farm) seems to be of C19 origin and it appears the medieval village, which is first recorded in 1541, was a slightly different location from the modern village. Given the uncertainty and lack of checkable evidence must be considered as doubtful.
