Bond list Ripon as a 'New post-Conquest medieval defensive circuits and medieval extensions to earlier circuits, consisting only of gates and/or earthen defences' of C13 date earthen defences, position largely or whole unknown, with no documentary record and limited excavation undertaken or reported since 1970.

Gatehouse Comments

This seems particularly weak evidence for defences. The archaeological excavation are not referenced and the EH Excavation index does not include any reference to defensive features in Ripon, although some boundary ditches of various ages are recorded. Map reference for Cathedral which presumably was within these presumably defences.
