Suggestion that large outer bailey of Mount Ferrant Castle is a possible burgus enclosure.

Gatehouse Comments

Is there any actual evidence, historical or archaeological, of urban settlement here? King usually used 'possible' for sites about which he had significant doubt. Creighton and Higham appear to have just listed this from King but without the questioning element. Actually the size of the castle is determined by the natural typography of the hill on which it stands. Gatehouse suspects the hill top would not have sufficient water supply to really support a town (the castle had a 'deep well'). So even if a town was intended (which is highly doubtful) it was probably a still-born idea.
