A mound, now destroyed, at Walpole St Peter TF 501165 may have been a motte. (Med. Arch. 1968). (King 1983)

NORFOLK: WALPOLE ST. PETER (TF 501165). Norwich Museum reports that the mound indicated on the O.S. map has been levelled for the construction of a bungalow. An adjoining field is called 'Castle Meadow' and suggests that the mound was a motte. (Med. Arch. 1968)

PastScape record for a "Medieval mound, possibly a navigation marker, windwill mound or motte" at TF49911696.

TF 4991 1697 This is the site of at least one mound which is known to have been visible during the 19th century. It is possible that it may have been the remains of a medieval windmill mound, but the exact date and identification of the site is unclear. However, a number of Middle Saxon to medieval pottery sherds were recovered from the mound and its surrounding area. (Norfolk HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Both mounds appear on 1886 map, neither looks like a motte. Whilst both were close to church the actual manorial centre appears to be Old Manor Farm. Now someway inland but the Wash would have extended further inland in the medieval period. However the suggestion this was a navigation marker seems particularly weak.
