The historian Leland records that Sir Robert Sheffield built a 'great tour of brick' at West Butterwick. His son, also called Sir Robert, then occupied this tower. Location uncertain, but perhaps on the south side of the village where park placenames are recorded in the 18th century. (North Lincolnshire HER)

Sheffeld ... began to build stately at Butterwik, as it apperith by a greate tour of brike. (Leland)

Gatehouse Comments

Lost late medieval brick tower house, presumably similar to Rochford and Hussey and a few other brick towers in Lincolnshire all, ultimately, taking inspiration from the great tower of Tattershall Castle.
