Gatehouse Comments

Scheduled as Iron Age univallate hillfort between two hills (Wendel and Hall Tower) Castle occupies Southern half. Although the Iron Age defences would still be considerable in the middle ages the parish church and most of the village are outside the IA defences. It seems more probably the northern part of the IA defences were used as a outer bailey to the castle built in the southern part of the hill fort.
