Cropmarks of large circular feature with channel off towards stream moat (? another). Roger Stirling-Brown examined the site and observes that the low ditched mound and counter scarp bank have been disturbed by ploughing or some other kind of destruction leaving shallow gulleys now showing as crop marks. Another hollow at the foot of the ridge could mark the site of the bailey ditch alignment. This could be a sub-manor of Dilwyn or possibly an earlier site of Falle (manor). (Herefordshire SMR)

On the opposite side of the Stretford Brook to the Fields Place moated site and partly cut by the road, aerial photographs suggest a possible motte and bailey castle. The motte was just to the east of the road with a bailey cut in two by the road. A possible second bailey and fishponds lie between the motte and the stream. (Shoesmith)

Gatehouse Comments

The Fields Place homestead moat survives as an earthwork. Whatever earthworks this supposed castle had were removed by pre-mechanical agriculture in a way those of the homestead moat were not. Does this suggest perhaps these were not the earthworks of a motte and bailey castle but slighter earthworks such as relic waterways and lynchets with a coincidental resemblance to a motte and bailey?
