Possible C12 motte. Excavations have located pottery and building foundations dating from 1150 AD. The motte could not be located during field investigation in 1972 because of tree planting.(PastScape)
A mound in Quarrywood in grounds of Whittern, was partially excavated by son of former owner, the late Capt L H Green. Pottery frags and possible stone building foundations were found. Dunning identified pottery of c1150 and suggested a possible C12 castle site. A tump is marked on the Bryant map. It is marked as an earthwork and called a quarry on the first edition map.
