The defensive ramparts survive at Leintwardine as earthworks around the north and east, which together with cartographic evidence (and some extrapolation) define a rectangular area. The defences have been investigated in ten areas, which demonstrated the form of the defences, consisting of a timber-laced rampart and a number of external ditches. Excavated evidence shows that the defences were constructed in the late 2nd century and consisted of a timber-laced rampart with a berm and ditch. There is evidence of a number of phases of reconstruction of the rampart and replacement of the ditch. The precise form of the defences, particularly on the southern side, remains to be determined. (Dalwood and Bryant)

Gatehouse Comments

Defended Roman town but defences not likely to have been maintained in middle ages although may have maintained some function. Entrenchment still plainly to be traced except on south side. They are very massive present extraordinary breadth of 20yds, are still 8-9ft above the level of the ground outside.
