Site first identified by Richard Kay as a possible castle site. Members of the archaeology section of the Woolhope Club visited the site. The motte is damaged and the bailey built over. Buried stone is evident in the motte ditch and on the top, possible evidence of a stone structure on the motte. Some of the stones show diagonal tooling marks possibly dating to C12. The castle would have commanded a position over the old river crossing. A possible roman crossing has also been proposed in this vicinity but no further evidence is given. (Herefordshire SMR)
