mound about 60' diameter and c 10' high. Sides are a v gentle slope and owner claims it is a rubbish dump. A slice on the SW has been excavated to make room for a house. Electric pole on top of the mound. Possibly bailey with ditch and possibly counter scarp bank on the NE side adjacent to the farmyard. (Herefordshire SMR)

Gatehouse Comments

This is doubtful as a castle, simple because the substantial Roman defences of Leintwardine were only 500m away and if a castle was built in this area then it would be within these Roman defences, the site of the medieval settlement and with control of the crossing point of the river. However, the name Kinton might imply this was a high status site. If this was the site of an Anglo-Saxon hall then it may have continued as a high status site in the Norman period with extra defences. However there is a record of an alleged round barrow nearby, so possibly a barrow although substantial rubbish mounds by farms are common.
