Located at this grid reference is a large circular feature, the very northern portion of which is still under pasture, the rest having been ploughed. There is the possibility of a motte visible now only as a cropmark. (Herefordshire Through Time)

Gatehouse Comments

The actual archaeological evidence for this being a motte (as opposed to the numerous other possible explanations for a circular cropmark feature) seem scant. However, is located by a house called Cobhall Court, suggesting this is the site of a medieval manorial centre. There are a number of such small manors which were the site of small mottes in Herefordshire. Herefordshire was an areaa of relatively dispersed settlement with many small manors held for part knight fees and where Norman lords had to impose their dominion on a mixed Anglo-Saxon and Welsh population.
