An earth bulwark was built at St Osyth in 1543. One of seven built to protect the Essex coast, it was of earthen construction with a drawbridge. Each bulwark had a captain, a lieutenant, a porter, two soldiers, and between three and six gunners. In 1552 it was decided to discontinue the garrisons. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

The exact location lost but must have been close to river bank and, given the large amount of marshy land, on a area of relatively firm land. Given this a likely location is Stone Point were a C19 Martello Tower was built.
