King writes nothing known of castle listed by Harvey. Gilbert Fitz Reinfrid obtained the manor in 1127 but 'there are neither appearances, nor written evidences, nor tradition to justify an opinion that either this Gilbert or any of his successors ever erected a castle at Ulverston.'(Mannex's directory of Furness and Cartmel, 1882).

Gatehouse Comments

The main manor of Ulverston was held by castle-ward, presumably service at Lancaster Castle. It may be Harvey had confused this service with a castle at Ulverston. Another manor in Ulverston, Neville Hall had a presumed pele tower at SD284784 not mentioned by King. Harvey gives no details so his Ulverston castle could also be a reference to this pele tower or to an earlier presumed castle. Map reference is to the parish church of St Mary's.
