Very worn ringwork reported at NY544556 (Salter 1998)

Carrock... probably on the fell-top, as 'fort' near chuch is natural. (Renn 1973)

A D-shaped enclosure, which could be Prehistoric, is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 2001. The site comprises a much denuded stone bank which defines a D-shaped enclosure. (PastScape at NY55225365. This appears to be the only possibly match with the description given by Salter and Renn)

Gatehouse Comments

The likely medieval manorial site is that recorded by the church (Castle Carrock); Renn, presumably confused this with the site at Hallsteads which was, at one time, dismissed as natural although further assessment questions that dismissal. The fell top site is not marked by any route ways or anything else to suggest medieval occupation, although a hunting lodge in such a location may not be totally excluded. There seems little reason to doubt the site by the church was the location of Gamel's 'castle'.
