A stonehouse or bastle is recorded at Mosshillgate in 1603: NY582601. 'Steven Peares a tenement (being a stonehouse) with the groundres...' The 1603 map shows it nearer to Mosshillgate Cottage than the present Mosshill farm, but there are no thick walls at the former. (PastScape–ref. Perriam and Robinson)
