A stonehouse or bastle was noted in the 1603 survey of fortified places at Gilsand:
NY550503. 'Tho. Moses a tenement and yard (beinge a stonehouse)...' and 'Simon Beecham a tenement and yard (beinge also a stonehouse)...' The two barns to the north of the vicarage are the site of these stonehouses. Surveyed in 1984 with plan. (PastScape ref. Perriam and Robinson)
