One of two possible towers mentioned in C13 manuscript 'Adam f. Dermann grants to Holm abbey land in Burgh named Buttes, near the tower (turellum) of Radulph Wallensis on the east, with the tower occupied by Andrew the chaplain...' Suggest that these might be milecastles on Hadrians Wall, but other grants make it clear that these towers were near Dykesfield at the west end of Burgh. (Perriam and Robinson 1998)

Adam f. Dermann grants to Holm abbey land in Burgh named Buttes, near the tower (turellum) of Radulph Wallensis on the east, with the tower occupied by Andrew the chaplain. (Adam and Radulph witnessed 1234–36 (C. & W. Trans. n.s. xxvi, 542) and Peter, vicar of Burgh, was 'then dean.'). (Grainger and Collingwood 1929)

Gatehouse Comments

Presumably Perriam and Robinson excluded this as being the pele tower on the east end of Burgh St Michael's church on the east of the village (was that occupied by Peter 'the dean'?). Andrew, as a chaplain, is a member of the gentry although his home is unlikely to have been anything beyond a small tower.Map reference is for Dykesfield as marked on the modern map. The site of Milecastle 73 on Watch Hill is at NY309593.
