Braystanes {sic} (Brough Hill) NY 008060. Supposed motte (Curwen p. 39). Elongated glacial formation with level top, rather resembling a slag-heap, but evidently natural. (King 1983)

Supposed motte but natural feature.

Curwen suggests that this was the motte of the de Braithstones 'the Braystones Tower' now stands upon it' (a 19th century home).

Curwen gives Parker as his source. (Perriam and Robinson 1998)

Gatehouse Comments

The location, by a river crossing, may seem reasonable for a motte. However, there is nothing to suggest any adaptation of this natural glacial hill as a castle, such as ditches or scarping (other than natural erosive scarping by the river on the north side). A late C19 tower sits on the top of the hill and the level top may, in part, be a modification of that date.
