Possible castle mentioned by Leland. (King 1983)

One of the Botreaux manors was held jointly by Hastings, Earl of Huntingdon, and the late Lord Hungerford. This is six miles south of Boscastle at Park, where there is a manor house or small castle. (Toulmin-Smith)

Six miles south of Boscastle Lord Huntingdon has a house called Parkwalls, where Lord Botreaux had a fine manor house or castle." (Chandler)

Gatehouse Comments

This is identified by King as Park near Egloshayle (SX031709) but this is considerable more than six miles from Boscastle. Parkwalls is a place-name in Advent CP which is six miles south of Boscastle and there seems no reason to doubt this location as that mentioned by Leland. However, nothing other than the place-name remains that is identifiable with Leland's castle. There is some probable medieval ridge and furrow, suggesting some settlement here but the location, on the edge of Bodmin Moor, and the name suggest a hunting lodge. What happened to this house? The situation is fairly isolated and there does not seem to be anything near enough to worth demolishing a house and quarrying the stone for other than the current farmhouse.
