Gatehouse Comments

This given site is a field on a steep slope and seems an unlikely site. However Ogbeare Hall, at SX30179593, was an important late medieval house. A C15 Great Hall survives in the much modernised building. This house, never described as fortified, is in a natural defensible position on a ridge promontory (although this also would give the house outstanding views of the countryside). Is the field name a reference to this house or a possible earlier building, of some form, on the site (for which there is no evidence).
