Emery writes "analysis in 1983 of Mottram Old Hall near Alderly Edge revealed that the sandstone block on the east side of this moated house had probably begun life as a fortified structure."
Multi-period house, built originally as a moated semi-fortified manor house, probably in C15. Only a portion of this house survives, forming the eastern section of the present building. The manor house was altered In the late C15 or early C15, when the upper floors were rebuilt in timber framing. In the early C17 the house was enlarged to form an E-plan structure but part of this building has since been demolished, leaving ranges set around three sides of a small courtyard. Further alterations were carried out during the early C18, including some rebuilding work in brick. The house served the manor farm from the mid C18 until 1922 and was subsequently restored on at least two occasions. (PastScape)
